Botanical Illustration

Botanical illustration surveys the astonishing historical range and visual diversity of the art of depicting flowers and other plants in paintings, prints, and drawings.

Botanical illustration was born out of a need to distinguish plants for their value as medicine and their uses in everyday life. It has captured the imaginations of artists and illustrators throughout Europe, the U.S., and the Far East. From ancient times through the Renaissance, the classical revival of the 18th and 19th centuries, and the present day, plants and flowers have been a unique source of inspiration and a common theme running through all art.
